Pipe Cutting

Radius Subterra delivers safe, controlled cold cutting for all pipe materials and diameters, supporting flowstopping, pipe removal and network modification.

Our spark-free techniques minimise risk and disruption, enabling precise, efficient access for maintenance and downstream works.

Pipe cutting is a critical stage in pipeline maintenance, modification and access creation. Radius Subterra provides controlled cold cutting services for isolated pipelines and outer carrier pipes, delivering safe, precise removal of pipe sections to support flowstopping, inspection and downstream installation activities. Our approach prioritises safety, accuracy and asset protection across planned works, network alterations and flowstopping procedures.

One common application is window cutting, where a defined section of the carrier pipe is carefully removed to expose the internal pipe. This enables tapping tee installation, branch saddle connection, inspection, or pipe repair without disturbing the surrounding network. Window size and location are designed to provide effective access while retaining structural control of the remaining pipe wall.

Where greater access is required, carrier pipe removal is used to expose longer sections of an internal pipeline. Cuts can be made circumferentially to separate pipe sections, and longitudinally to split the pipe and allow controlled segment extraction. Methods are selected to suit pipe material, diameter, wall thickness, and site constraints.

All pipe cutting is undertaken using cold cutting, spark-free techniques, ensuring no heat, flame, or ignition sources are introduced. This makes the process suitable for gas infrastructure, confined environments, and sensitive locations while avoiding heat-affected zones that could compromise pipe integrity. Radius Subterra selects specialist cutting equipment for each application, enabling precise, repeatable cuts across metallic and plastic pipelines of virtually any diameter.

Combined with experienced personnel and robust method statements, our approach supports safe, efficient cutting that reduces project risk and accelerates downstream activities, including flowstopping, branch installation, system modification and controlled pipe removal. This integrated method ensures cutting operations progress smoothly from access creation through to completion, supporting safe network operation and reliable project delivery.

Pipe Cutting technologies

Engineered cold cutting technologies delivering safe, spark-free pipe separation and access for maintenance, flowstopping, carrier pipe removal and controlled pipeline modifications.

Circumferential cold cutting
Circumferential cold cutting

Circumferential cold cutting is a controlled technique used to create a full 360-degree cut around a pipeline, allowing isolated sections or outer carrier pipes to be cleanly separated. Radius Subterra delivers this method using cold, spark-free, mechanical cutting processes, ensuring safe execution without introducing heat, flame, or ignition risk. The result is a clean, square cut suitable for controlled section removal and follow-on works.

The technique applies to a wide range of pipe materials, wall thicknesses, and diameters, and is selected when a defined pipe break or complete section removal is required. Circumferential cold cutting is commonly used during flow stopping operations, planned maintenance, and pipeline modification where accurate separation is essential.

Circumferential cold cutting differs from other cutting methods, as it fully severs the pipe rather than creating access openings or longitudinal splits. It is typically chosen where pipe sections must be removed in controlled lengths to support insertion techniques, connections to PE pipework, welding, blanking, inspection, or full asset replacement.

Where a carrier pipe contains an inserted internal pipe, controlled setup and depth management ensure only the outer pipe is cut, protecting the inner asset. Because the process is cold and mechanically driven, it avoids heat-affected zones and reduces permitting complexity when compared to hot work.

By matching the cutting technique to the application, Radius Subterra delivers predictable, repeatable circumferential cuts that support safe pipe removal, efficient downstream activities, and reduced overall project risk.

Longitudinal cold cutting

Longitudinal cold cutting is a high-precision, spark-free technique used to split pipe sections along their length, typically alongside circumferential cold cuts. Radius Subterra applies this method on isolated pipelines or outer carrier pipes where long sections must be removed safely and efficiently, especially in congested excavations or where an internal pipe is present.

The technique is not applied in isolation. Circumferential cuts define the length of pipe to be removed, while longitudinal cuts divide that section into controlled segments. This enables long, heavy pipe sections to be removed in manageable lengths, reducing handling risk and avoiding the need to extract full pipe spools from restricted work areas.

Longitudinal cold cutting relies on specialist, mechanically driven equipment capable of maintaining consistent cutting depth, straightness, and alignment over extended pipe lengths. This level of control is critical where an internal pipe is present, ensuring cutting is limited to the target carrier pipe wall and the internal asset remains protected. Depth control mechanisms and mechanical safeguards are applied to prevent over-penetration during the cutting process.

Radius Subterra operates advanced longitudinal cutting capability in the UK and beyond, allowing large lengths of carrier pipe to be split rapidly while maintaining high levels of accuracy and control. This significantly reduces cutting time on site and accelerates follow-on activities such as flow stopping operations, branch connections to the internal pipe, inspection, insertion techniques, or pipe replacement.

All longitudinal cold cutting is completed using cold, spark-free mechanical processes, removing the need for hot-work controls and reducing risk in gas infrastructure and confined environments. When combined with circumferential cutting, the technique provides a controlled, repeatable method for removing carrier pipe sections in complex site conditions.

Carrier pipe removal (cold cutting)

Carrier pipe removal is a specialist operation used to expose an internal pipeline housed within a redundant outer carrier pipe. Radius Subterra delivers this controlled process to provide safe access to the live or operational internal pipe, which would otherwise remain enclosed.

The operation is carried out using a planned combination of circumferential and longitudinal cold cutting techniques. Circumferential cuts define the length of carrier pipe to be removed, while longitudinal cuts split that section along its length, enabling the carrier pipe wall to be separated and removed from around the internal pipe. This method allows the carrier to be removed without transferring load or stress onto the live internal asset.

Carrier pipe removal is completed to provide full circumferential access to the internal pipe surface for inspection, planned maintenance, and leak investigation or repair. It also enables the installation of branch saddles or the deployment of flowstopping equipment, allowing sections of the internal pipe to be cut out and new connections installed in a controlled manner.

All cutting is carried out using cold, spark-free mechanical methods, ensuring no heat, flame, or ignition source is introduced. Cutting depth is strictly controlled to the carrier pipe wall, protecting internal pipeline integrity throughout the operation. This approach is particularly important in gas and water environments where the internal pipe may remain live.

Radius Subterra provides a fully integrated delivery, managing carrier pipe removal and all follow-on works, ensuring safety control, reducing interface risk, and enabling efficient progression from access to completion.

Window cutting

Window cutting is a specialist cold-cutting technique used to create a localised access window in a redundant carrier pipe, exposing the live internal main only at the point of work. Radius Subterra applies this technique when access is required for a connection without removing full carrier pipe sections.

Limiting the cut to a defined window allows the remaining carrier to continue providing mechanical protection to the internal pipeline.  To maintain control and protect the internal asset, window cutting is completed using controlled depth settings, ensuring the cut is limited strictly to the carrier pipe wall. This provides accurate access on metallic carrier pipes while allowing the internal pipes to remain live throughout the operation.

Window cutting is typically undertaken to enable installation of a tapping tee or branch saddle onto the internal live main for a new service or connection. The window is sized and positioned to allow surface preparation and installation directly on the internal pipe while keeping exposure to the minimum necessary. This differentiates window cutting from carrier pipe removal, which requires complete section extraction rather than localised access.

All works are delivered using cold, spark-free mechanical cutting methods, eliminating heat, flame, and ignition risk. Radius Subterra provides a fully integrated solution, completing the window cut and subsequent live-main connection under a single scope to ensures safe, controlled execution.

Large diameter polyethylene (PE) pipe cutting

Large diameter PE pipe cutting is a specialist operation delivered by Radius Subterra to support flowstopping, asset installation, repairs, and new connections on polyethylene pipelines. The technique is typically used to remove defined pipeline sections, enabling follow-on works to be completed on the exposed pipe ends.

Cutting large diameter PE presents challenges not typically encountered on metallic pipelines. Heat generated during cutting can cause the PE material to soften or partially melt, leading to blade seizure or interruption of the cutting process. In addition, poor alignment or inadequate control of cutting equipment can produce cuts that are not straight or square, causing issues when installing electrofusion couplers or other PE fittings.

Large diameter PE pipes may also be subject to residual axial tension or compressive forces, which can cause the pipe to move or close during cutting. Managing these forces and maintaining control throughout the cut is essential to achieving a clean, accurate separation.

Radius Subterra’s cutting operations are carried out by experienced technicians with specific knowledge of PE pipe behaviour, ensuring correct setup, alignment, and sequencing for each application. Specialist PE cutting equipment minimises heat generation and maintains alignment, producing clean, square pipe ends suitable for electrofusion or mechanical jointing.

Large diameter PE cutting is often undertaken alongside flowstopping, where accurate section removal is required before installing a new connection, carrying out a repair or fitting inline assets. Radius Subterra provides an integrated service, delivering cutting, flowstopping, remedial works, asset installation, and commissioning under a single scope for safe, efficient progression from intervention to return to service.
